Italian restaurant at the feet of the Basilica

Travelers edition #2

A couple of weeks ago we had a lovely dinner at this Italian restaurant, celebrating my father’s birthday and I thought I would share our experiences about the journey.

The place is located right next to the basilica on Szent István Square, near Budapest’s fashion street known as Andrássy Street.

Unfortunately we did not take pictures of the interior of the restaurant, which was very pleasing, inviting you to a delicious lunch or dinner. The menu was a little strange at first, where all of the foods and drinks were numbered, but not in any logical order (or at least we couldn’t figure it out). Unfortunately for some, the place only offers Italian food, lucky for some, there was a lot of dishes to choose from.

The place is quite affordable considering it is in the heart of city and has tons of other places, which charge very high prices for not so good quality.

For drinks we have ordered homemade lemonades and water. Just the usual, nothing special here.

But now let’s get down for what everybody came here for: the FOOD!

For starters, I can personally vouch for the tortelloni soup, which in my opinion was very tasty. Good portion, not overdone, just the right mix of the good old Italian flavors.

Unfortunately I don’t have all of the pictures of the main courses, but I’ll show you what I have in just a moment.

As I’ve told you before the place only offers Italian style dishes, that means: Pasta, pizza, gnocchi, lasagna. We have not tried the pizza however the other three were fantastic.

I ordered a simple quattro formaggi gnocchi, which was a mistake. It was a mistake because it was too simple for what the restaurant had to offer. The feeling was reinforced, when I saw what my dad ordered, which was something from heaven, it was SOOO GOOOD. I’ll get to it just a sec.

My brother had a lasagna, which was you know, good, a lasagna. A little parmesan cheese on top, nothing that you can go wrong with. I’ve tried it and it was fine, however, if one thing that stood out for me in this lasagna compared to the ones I’ve had before, this one did not burn down my whole tongue. Every other I’ve had, must’ve come from a volcano or something. But he made the same mistake I have, which is ordering something that is too simple for the place.

Aaaand here comes the fun part, remember when I told you I don’t have pictures from every dish? Well thats right, I didn’t take photos of my moms and dads dishes so you just have to trust me on this one, okay? Good!

My mom ordered a pasta with pesto, veggies (as she always does) and shrimps. Now I did not try hers, because I don’t like the veggies nor do I like shrimps. But she said it was great and delicious, so for anyone who likes this combo of ingredients, I think it would be a fine choice.

And for the grand finale. The one that I’ve been yapping, about for the past couple of minutes. The dish, which put a quattro formaggi gnocchi and a very well made lasagna to shame (not really, but you get the point). My dad ordered a HOMEMADE pasta with pesto and some shrimps. The texture and taste of the pasta was something from a dream. It was firm, but not raw. Tasty, but did not take away flavor from the pesto. It. Was. Just. GREAT. So for everyone, who likes pesto I would recommend this dish 10000%, if they have the chance.

Overall the main courses were great and I encourage everyone to try something a little more unique, than just a quattro formaggi gnocchi. The place has so much more to offer, than we have experienced and the pizzas looked great as well, that I’ve seen on other tables.

For dessert my mom and I tried one each. I have asked for a tiramisu, which was again, something simple, but very tasty. The cream was not heavy and the texture was spot on. My mom ordered Italian cannolis. It was vanilla pudding in some pastry with pistachio pieces for the topping. It looked simply awesome. The crunchiness of the pastry and the smoothness of the cream really complimented each other. One plate came with two pieces, so you can even share with someone, if you don’t have enough room after the homemade pesto pasta ;).

Overall conclusion:

I think the food was spot on, our waiter was very friendly and helpful, and a huge bonus for me is that it was not very expensive. Also the prices include the 15% service fee, something to keep in mind. I would come back here any day of the week and would recommend it to any fellow Italian food lover out there.

Hope you have enjoyed todays post, if so, be sure to check back again and share it with your friends and family and remember: ‘Life’s short, just enjoy it!’
